Rough weather New Zealand Coastline

Small changes EVENTUALLY ad up to huge results…

Having worked at sea for over 10 years, our founder, Soren Crabb, has learned to connect with nature and has had the opportunity to explore some of the most stunning and remote parts of this planet. This experience left Soren with a profound appreciation and love for the Earth. This love has been instrumental in guiding our efforts at 1919 Distilling to minimize the impact we have on our environment and community.

Sustaniable SPIRITS

ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME WE CAN REDUCE WASTE

As 1919 Distilling began to expand, the team observed a significant amount of packaging waste within the hospitality supply chain. We were determined to discover a solution to nearly eliminate the use of single-use bottles in the system. Through a substantial reconsideration of the supply chain and the creation of our closed-loop refillable offerings for bars, we have successfully prevented the use of over 5,000 bottles every year.

This closed-loop system not only delivers a substantial cost advantage to the hospitality sector but also greatly reduces carbon emissions, contributing to a significant reduction in our carbon footprint."

Whisky Box…. LEss is more

When working abroad at sea our founder Soren was used to headwinds, and charting his own course. It’s this attitude that influences everything we do and that includes our packaging.

With most whisky bottles around the world coming in boxes or tins, that are then thrown away once at home we asked ourselves dose whisky need a box at all?

The answer you ask? is No.

Whisky doesn’t require secondary packaging and by removing the secondary packaging there is less cardboard used, less ink and less materials, the decision to remove it completely from our core range will eliminate energy and emissions used in production and transportation - a move which will significantly reduce carbon emissions, weight and waste.

While we appreciate that you may wish to ad a box to your order when gifting we do ask you think twice about if its needed.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

While the reality is that we can't control the power we receive from the grid, we can choose to purchase our power from a company that is dedicated to generating 100% of its power from renewable sources. This is why we are committed to sourcing our power from Meridian Energy. By selecting a provider that generates power from renewable energy, we can ensure that the profits they generate are reinvested in more sustainable energy production.

Reducing Ocean Waste

It's no surprise that when a business is founded by a sailor, there's a deep affinity for the ocean. This strong connection led our founder, Soren Crabb, to explore ways to combat ocean waste with every online order. Implementing this mission posed challenges, especially as a small company. We needed a solution and a trusted partner to ensure we practiced what we preached. That's why we proudly collaborate with Greenspark.

A portion of every online sale automatically contributes to Greenspark. This financial support empowers Plastic Bank in advancing the circular economy by monetizing plastic waste. Collectors receive a premium for the materials they gather, aiding them in providing essential family necessities. The collected materials transform into Social Plastic®, ready for seamless integration into products and packaging within a closed-loop supply chain.

Plastic Bank not only thwarts ocean-bound plastics from contaminating our waterways but also minimizes new plastic production by encouraging businesses to opt for recycled sources. Plastic Bank makes a significant global impact, reducing ocean plastic and improving the lives of collectors.

Currently, Plastic Bank operates in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Egypt. They strategically select locations based on three key criteria: high unemployment, high poverty rates, and high plastic pollution levels. This approach aligns with 14 of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Giving Back to the COMMUNITY

At 1919 Distilling, we don't shy away from acknowledging that, unfortunately, alcohol can have adverse effects on our community and society when misused. That's why we've actively sought ways to upcycle some of the incredible produce and botanicals we use in crafting our gin to benefit our community.

In 2022, we initiated a program where we donate our peeled Lemons and Oranges to Everybody Eats. Everybody Eats operates on a pay-as-you-feel dining concept that's open to everyone. They serve delectable, chef-prepared meals designed to nourish people, not landfills. Discover their mission:
